The accreditation “CEN” means Central European Norm.
This accreditation was created some time ago by the major Padlock manufacturers who devised the testing that is required to be passed to achieve this highly sort after accreditation.
The CEN rated accreditation is for Padlocks only and and not be used for types of locks such as euro locks which have their own standards of accreditation testing.

The BS EN12320: 2012 accreditation awarded by the Association of Building Hardware Manufacturers, is very similar to the CEN grading system.
If a padlock has been tested and CEN graded then it automatically complies with the British Standard which is very important to know.
We generally recommend Padlocks that fall within the 4 - 5 CEN grading for domestic use such as Households, gates & sheds.
CEN grade 6 padlocks offer maximum security but should really only be considered for commercial use due to the size.
The frustrating element of the testing for manufacturers when it comes to achieving CEN grading is that if a padlock fails only one of the testing criteria below, the grading is dropped accordingly.
An example being if a Padlock passes all the required 6 grading testing but fails the testing resistance to temperature, it would be lowered in grading.

A great example of a master key suited system inclusive of CEN rated padlocks is a recent project SheffLOCK undertook at a school in South Yorkshire.
The caretaker contacted ourselves explaining that the there were simply too many keys to the many door locks and padlocks to the gates at the school.
He also wanted a system whereby he had complete access to all doors and gates to the school but wanted restricted access to other members of staff & visitors such as cleaners, teachers and any sub contracted workmen. Also he could not keep a track on how many keys were in circulation and who had a key as the keys were easily duplicated as the locks themselves were not accredited to the required standards. This was obviously a problem for both security and convenience.
